Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process for getting a fire alarm on a new building in Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley? Is a permit required?
Before work can begin, you will need a fire alarm permit from the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Engineered fire plans need to be submitted along with the permit application. Sending us the building’s construction plans is the best way to start. Once received a fire engineer will review and draw up the fire plans.
What is the difference between a sprinkler alarm and a fire alarm system?
A building’s fire alarm system is the electronic side. Parts include the fire alarm panel, smoke and heat detectors, pull stations, and horn strobes. The sprinkler system includes the water piping, sprinkler heads.
Do I need internet or phones?
The requirements can vary from each city:
Greeley- you are required to have two working phone lines or one cell unit that also has internet backup
Fort Collins- you are required to have two working phone lines connected to your fire panel or a cell unit
In Loveland, you are required to have two working phone lines connected to your fire panel or a cell unit
Is a fire alarm system test the same a sprinkler system test?
A sprinkler test is different than a fire alarm test. Commercial buildings that have sprinklers need both. During a fire alarm test, technicians will clean and inspect the electrical fire system (panel, horn/strobe,s pull stations, ext.)
How often does my firm/system need to be inspected? Who sends in the paperwork?
The typical fire system in Greeley, Fort Collins, and Loveland needs one test per year. Please let us know if you would like to verify what is required for your building. First Class Security will submit the required paperwork to the AHJ after the inspection.
Does VOIP work with alarm panels?
VOIP isn’t reliable for alarm communication. If you are switching to VOIP we recommend putting your alarm system on a cellular or internet communicator.
What’s the difference between “house” smoke detectors and smoke detectors that are tied to the security system?
Many homes have “house smokes” that are installed in the home’s electrical panel. They are not connected to a security system. These types of smokes do not send a signal to the central station for a dispatch and are best serviced by an electrician. We offer smoke detectors that will tie in to your home security system. These smoke detectors will alert the fire department if they detect smoke.
I need to backup footage of an event that happened. How do I export camera footage? Do you recommend filming with a phone?
The first step is to view the camera playback and write down the exact time frame that you want for the footage. Next, you will find the “backup” or “export” portion of the NVR. Please give us a call, and we will be happy to help. While viewing the event, you can take a quick video of it with your smartphone to have it backed up to a different device.
Why is my fire system beeping?
Some common fire system troubles are Communication errors, ground faults, and smoke detector troubles. The fire panel display will sometimes tell you which trouble you have. Please give us a call, and we can walk you through silencing and fixing the trouble or help schedule a fire technician for a service diagnostic.
What is the basic fire or security system cost?
The cost of the fire or security system will vary depending on your home or business and the level of protection you would like. We will be happy to give a FREE quote on your home or business of any size.
Will I be able to view my security system or cameras on my phone?
Yes, Alarm.com offers a great app that allows you to do everything on your phone that you can do at the keypad. Alarm.com also offers special notifications and the ability to view all of the history that takes place on the system.
Am I able to cancel my phone line?
Yes, there are great alternative cell and internet communicators that can be installed on your new or existing system.
How do I get a discount on my home insurance?
Many of our customers get a discount from their insurance company for having a security system. We will be happy to send your insurance agent an alarm certificate if they offer a discount. (For the best discount, remember to let our representative know you’d like us to install smoke/heat detector combos).
What are the types of sensors on a security system?
A basic security system typically includes door and window sensors, motion detectors, glass break detectors, and residential smoke detectors.

If you have a DSC 5010, DSC 1616, DSC 1832, DSC NEO HS2032, and DSC NEO HS2064, press “(star)(2)” to find out what the trouble is. Common troubles are a low battery, phone line trouble, and failure to communicate. If your system is beeping, please give us a cal,l and we will be happy to help. You can press “#” to silence the beeping.
Are wired or wireless cameras better?
We use both, but prefer hardwired cameras whenever possible. Hardwired cameras save you from needing to change batteries. Hardwired cameras also avoid wifi issues that you might run into with wireless cameras.
Can the cameras and security be on the same app?
You will be able to view your cameras and security system on the same app if they are both Alarm.com. You may have two apps if your video system is a different brand than Alarm.com
